Mark Cuban, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks takes on the question, "Is the connection between hip-hop and the NBA a bad thing?" He makes a good point by defining what exactly is the so-called hip-hop generation:
"Every kid today. Your young sons. Your young daughters. Your nieces. Your nephews. They are all part of the Hip Hop Generation. They dont have to like all Hip Hop music. They could like Alt rock, punk, R&B, Opera, Musicals, whatever. But somewhere along the line, they sang along with a rap song. Thats just the way it is. Hip hop songs were 4 of the top 5 titles on BillBoards 2004 charts. It's today's pop music. Talking about kids and talking about the Hip Hop Generation are interchangable."
And for as long as I can remember hip-hop consumers have been 3/4 White, and very much middle class. So who is this Hip Hop Generation they are talking about? Seems like it's just a code word for "Young Violent Niggers" to me.
So let's rephrase the question, using this decoding of that term- Is the connection between Young Violent Niggers and the NBA a bad thing? Ok, now we can get a straight answer.
Good interpretation, that's what they are really trying to say. They know these players backgrounds(i.e. Ron Artest from Queensbridge and known to hang around "street dudes"), and yet they still pay them millions of dollars to drive ticket and merchandise sales. Not saying that where Artest is from was the reason why he defended himself when a drink was thrown on him, yet there were other signs over the past few years that Artest was capable of such an act. If NBA owners want to really get a high ROI (Return On Investment), then they should invest in their players for more than their own bottom line!

To a certain extent it may be fear of Young Violent Niggers. It is also a fear among white people that their white children will start "acting black."
