The Non-Legacy of Big Daddy Kane
True story, Big Daddy Kane needs a new publicist. He's your favorite rapper's favorite rapper from back in the day, yet he doesn't get the same respect or amount of mentions as Rakim, KRS-1 or even Kool G Rap.
I was at Just Blaze's birthday party when the DJ threw on some Kane ("Half Steppin" or something else). The voice, the flow, the smooth twist of lyrics- I was re-amazed at how nice the man is. He's the Jigga of the late eighties.
And how influential was he? I patterned my own style after people who walked in the trail Kane blazed.
Eminem even said on Yellow Brick Road:
I spit out a line, and rhymed birthday with first place
And we both had the same rhymes that sound alike
We was on the same sht, that Big Daddy Kane sht
With compound syllables sound combined
Eminem probably sparked a few more Google searches for Kane's name. But what would that matter? I can't even find an official website for this hip-hop legend.
So here's my idea. Let's build him an incredible site with pictures, lyrics, sound files, and links to relevent sites. Let's put it in a blog to make things easy to update. Then let's send out a press release and get some people to write about this (which is dumb easy, as Bol proved) and hope that Kane gets shaken out of his early retirement to spit something-something fresh for the kids.
If you're down for the cause, hook up with me on 43things to build a fan site for Big Daddy Kane.
Damn, son. You put the battery in my back with this post: Why was I--true story--just thinking about posting about duke?
He is undoubtably one of THEE most slept-on MCs do ever do this shit (let's cut the shit, him and Ra remain neck-in-neck, as far as legacies go).
I should know because duke influenced me.
Yeah, this is a GOOD look. I'm gonna have to post about this (along with that other ish), too.
Gimmie a sec.

I have a connection to Kane.
Let's make it happen. The man was incredible. And he had so many clones.

Early retirement? What are you talking about? He's continued releasing albums. The biggest problem Kane has had as of late, wack production on his recent albums...and not his best rhyming display either. But when he drops a verse on someone else's joint, he comes off as raw as back in the day....case in point... J5's "a Day At The Races". I've been a BDK fan since back in the day and have constantly checked his new stuff, but he hasn't been coming off all that well on album. He needs more quality control on his albums. Rakim still gets attention because of decent solo releases and his hi-profile attempt at making the Aftermath deal work. KRS-One still gets his pros because he's been very prolific lately, with 6 albums since the year 2000....
-Strickly for da breakdancers & emceez
-The sneak attack
-spiritual minded
-the mix tape
-The Kristyle
-Keep right
...and that's not included the unreleased versions of the mix tape and the kristyle which include tracks not seen on the final versions.
BDK needs better production, a renewed focus on his rhyming on album and perhaps get more music released.
I look forward to the day that BDK finds himself lyrically on album once again.

word, let's make this happen!
hashim: i've sent you an email about this... just drop me a line...
Posted by: sven | 2005.01.18 at 04:31 PM
sign me up.
allow me to suggest some possible content areas:
-discography (obviously)
-bio
-the style of kane: the sartorial splendor that was kane in his prime (unfortunately, this would have to include the purple lace suit in the 'don't curse' video)
-most memorable cameos/guest shots
- after kane: rappers who owe a debt to bdk
add on...

Don't forget to include things like the little beef between Kane and Tony D/YZ over the "Thinkin' of a Master Plan" sample...

Great idea to build a site for Kane. It's funny that somebody left a comment on my site over the weekend about Kane. That person was trying to find updated info on him. You'd think that these guys would have some kind of site (at the very least a blog) registered in their names.

I hope there wont be a problem with posting audio/video clips. Every video ever made by Kane has to be included.
How about applying the same idea for other slept-on pioneers in the game. If Kane is getting a site, Shan has to get one for being the first to set it off at Cold Chillin'.
I'm with it!

Agreed. Kane is very underrated.
He paid the price for being visionary
(rap/r & B). Jay-Z used to hang with him
and picked up some pointers.........
His Manager needs to get a web site going..

I started a Big Daddy Kane Tribute group awhile back but as of right now no Kane fans have found it. I'd like to have Kane himself be a part of it and have him talk to us. Hopefully this group can get going:

Big Daddy Kane is one of the greatest.
His best stuff is probably even better than Rakim's. I heard he was supposed to do an album all produced by the Alchemist. What happened?

Big Daddy Kane is the "TRUE" package that represents the essence of Hip Hop.
The man is not only an incredible lyricist he's also a great dancer, style cordinator, actor, and ultimate playboy.
People tend to forget that Kane wrote most of the lyrics for The Juice Crew members back in the day.
If it were not for Big Daddy Kane we would not have Jay-Z, Kayne West and a lot of these new cats today who need to pay homage to the likes of Big Daddy Kane and the rest of the Old Skool pioneers who paved their way.

I thought I was the only one remembering Big Daddy Kane (can show & prove) but having checked the Net I'm moved and happy so many of us appreciating his incredible skills are still here.
I've been thinking of providing BDK with dope beats matching his greatness and I've found a producer who thinks he's up to this challenge.
Is there any chance BDK can find out about it?
If you're so blessed (gifted, remember? ) you just can't retire like that.
I mean whatever BDK might be doing, if it's not making records as well, is ... not enough.
Peace

PEEP that DJ J Period Best of Big Daddy Kane...

Big Daddy Kane is the greatest MC of all-time (in my opinion), join the group (or click on my name to email me), it's free. Anyone that needs to know about anything Kane related, just ask, I think I got all the answers...peace.
Here's the Yahoo group web address:
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/longlivethebigdaddykane/
PS - That DJ J Period album is FIRE, DJ Live, I've had it for a couple of years. Probably one of the best mixtapes I've ever heard, because it was done very well, and not too many blurbs or DJ shouts, that run over the songs like a Clue CD.

Well, let`s just say that we should try to reach Kane ( through his manager...) and let him know that we need another album by one of the best in Hip Hop history...
These new cats all they think about is point Biggie and 2Pac as the greates, man, U should learn that most of them used to copy Kane“s lyrics...
Posted by: JuliusMC | 2006.09.27 at 11:48 AM
And of course, we all know that if one of these big names ( as far as production ) picked up Kane and used his strength on the mic we would see a great album...
Dre, DJ Premier, Kanye West, Just Blaze, Scott Storch, Alchemist...What are U guys doing?
