Judy Rosen on The Genius of Beef:
"The dirty little secret of rap fans is this: Beneath the Sean John hoodies and thuggish scowls, they're more gossip-obsessed than Cindy Adams and a roomful of her girlfriends."
So what?

So What? So Whom? Who the hell is Judy Rosen and why is she getting our $-per-word from Slate? Today's overcooked rap beef could def be an amazing thesis, or novel, or non-fiction tome; but only if done right by the right writer... Probably not Jody Rosen (The Nation's music critic and the author of White Christmas: The Story of an American Song). I'd bet my life she don't know nothin' about Roxanne Shante vs. Real Roxanne.
Send me your royalty checks for Mother's Day, Judy.

I find this statement to be true. However, I believe that this has always been a part of the culture. Rap or Hip Hop wasn't always in the mainstream. If you did not hear about something on wax, you heard about it through word of mouth. There had always been discussions about who had beef with who, who was better and so forth.
