It's all about 'Roots Manuva' man, check for Roots Manuva.

ian

But SAS are a throwback to that imitating NYC hip hop thing. Why fcck with a bootleg UK take on the Dipset sound when you can get and, in your case, Hashim, you literally live down the block, from the real thing? WTF?

Hashim

Ian, you're exactly right.

But the only reason I like them is because I get what they're saying. It's Dipset with a funny accent. I like it.

cherryl with 2 R's

one of the dopest UK emcees is Skinny Man of Mud Family. He has some ridiculous tracks produced by DJ Vadim...back in 2002. he is working on some new stuff but i haven't heard it yet.

Tego

You still don't get it Hash? Check these MP3's.... http://www.artrockeraudio.com/041215/mars_bars.mp3 ... http://www.artrockeraudio.com/250405/emily_kane_remix.mp3

I remember when the South first started to blow, the main complaint was that "I can't understand them, and they all sound the same". I think with British rappers, it's an aquired taste. Dizzee lyrically is a monster, I think if you listen to his album a couple of times you'll pick it up.

It's like watching Lock Stock or Snatch a couple of frames faster.

p.s. SAS are Poo-Poo!

Stone

Do you listen to dancehall? Because most of the UKHH rhyme style is based on that very same Jamacian patois. And yet, no one complains about understanding dancehall lyrics.

Yes, UK Hip Hop is an aquired taste, but true hop hop heads should admire the fact that they have taken a US creation and added their own style and spin to it, rather than have yet ANOTHER imitation of US hip hop.

Joey

Hashim, no Kool Savas? The German Diplomats? LOL. The Euro Gang is everywhere. "So Free" is a funny track.

Yassine

Ahhhh the memories: Gunshot, Silver Bullet, Hijack, Demon Boyz..
they still get a regular spin in my cd-player.

Miss Hipstah

Take into account that the slang they are using mixed with the heavy accents is also a factor of not understanding them.

The (slang) language that is used in the UK has always been mindblowing to many on this side of the pond. I still remember being baffled the first tiem I heard terms like "snog" or "trainers".

And yeah it is similar to dancehall patois. How much of that slang do we hear on a regular basis since it's been introduced to the American music scene? If you give it some time, I'm sure there will be future Hip Hop heads who will be saying things they learned from listening to Dizzee or Kano.

Check out Jehst, Foreign Beggars , Klashnekoff ,Braintax,Taskforce, Phi Life Cypher and Skinnyman for some of the bigger british acts that aint acheived massive fame .....yet

jazzr

i agree with the last post. Jehst is one of the greatest ever lyrically. plus he has crazy wordplay. i know it sounds unbelievable that a uk mc could be that dope because i find most non u.s hip hop is wack and sounds ridiculous. but i suggest you listen to the song "high plains anthem" to get an introduction to jehst. i listen to 99.99% u.s hip hop, and have for a very long time, so something international has gotta be amazing for me to even bother checking for it, and jehst (and to a lesser degree klashnekoff and kyza - peep the song"nightbreed") is worthy. normally the accent immediately puts me off, but i think he pulls it off. if you like dope metaphors, he is the best ive heard. peep some of his lyrics:

i ride with lost peasants,
hot steppin across deserts,
lettin the dust settle for sheep who want shepards,
yeah i rock sessions,
with unorthodox methods,
the messenger,
ready for death when god beckons.
on frontlines,
worldwide kids have got weapons,
and grey skies hide the sunshine from heavens,
im threatened
by the seven
sins of my species.
i dont need t.v,
i read tea leaves,
smoke the peace pipe,
in the chiefs tee pee,
i speak freely,
the 3D
graffitti writer,
its kinda like the new easy rider,
more bad apples in the crew
than cheap cider.....

this saga will be spoken in 3 parts,
starting form the moment this tree sparks,
opponents get broken,
like weak hearts.
step into my theme park,
the beats cant fu*k with my karma,
any drama's
confined to these speachmarks,
margins n paragraphs.
bastards try to sabotage,
but cant see past the camouflage.....

Miss Hipstah

I am so happy people are mentioning Jehst and Klashnekoff. Also, peeps should check out Yungun. His lyrics are amazing as well (I think.)

Discombobulation

I think its a sad day when I see comments like I listen to 99.99% us hip hop, as not only is it narrow minded but lets face it the rest of the world is by and large passing you by.... when you have talent such as skinny man, skeleton, skitz, roots manuva, taskforce, NTM, Saien Supa Kru, IAM etc it seems a damn shame.

Dizzee is not easy to understand but he tells it like it is, he is in fact expressing himself truly and sincerely, and I was under the impression that Hip hop was about expression, thoughtful lyrics that handle a n artists perception of the world and a good beat (cf this is of course a matter of taste).

If I have to deal with another rubbish NERD or 50 cent "song" I will cry its not art it is hip hops answer to popular music and there is not substance at all.

If you do not understand what they are saying, let face it similar to Drum and Bass MCs and Dancehall than try to listen to them. I am american and yet I have no problems understanding in essence the country that gave us our language with which we can express ourselves and to create the hip hop scene....

So lets face it the deal is the UK is adapting and growing the scene not detracting it.....

There that should put it all to rights...!

Discombobultion fan

I totally agree with what Discombobulation stated... Whoever is down for the expansion of Hip Hop culture say "I"!!!!

Hate it or love it, Hip Hop (made from Jamaican Kool Herc) has spread from America, to Japan, to the UK, France & Germany, and is basically showing the rest of the world how to make good music. Spread more love & keep your mind open!

Coxman

UK hip hop over in the land down under has got a big following, acts like Braintax, Mystro, Yungun, Jehst, Skinnyman etc.

over in oz we've had a huge accent debate and that may be why we like the 'natural' sound of those artists, where as new zealand went the other way and only like 'american' sounding raps.

uk hip-hop is mad, the accent makes it different hip-hop from anything else, who really wants everybody to sound like they're from new york.

Black

You should peep this unsigned kid from london called 9inekeyz, He is Ill and sticks to the way he speaks, beyond that he i writing songs people can digest without a heartburn.
Peace
I found his page located at
www.soundclick.com/9inekeyz

topporkie

How comes when ever s.a.s are mentioned people stat getting nervous. Please listen to who dares wins its amazing so stop trying to turn these comment to other mc advantage because hasim was not comenting on them

dj step one

I still dont care whayt anyone says, Dizze is fucking rubbish.I'm not saying 'he's not hip hop' or whatever but if you ever heard anything by Nas,Guru,Kane,Jadakiss or even fucking LL then how can you think he's anything approaching good?
while people are bigging up their fave UK artists I should mention Karl Hinds,,Task Force,Rodney P,Skeme, and all the rest of 'em - bt its really all about Terra Firma!

dj step one

also, for those having trouble with the slang, get hold of
Karl Hinds 'Don Gramma' (the orig not the remix) - its a british take on Big L's Ebonics so it might clear some things up

denozag

some bady give it up to uk artists.those boys are really good homie ,they spit rymes like em aint gat no tongues, they toss tha mic like em gona toast the lyrics down the amplifier.thos e boys really good.
NB__ look out for the denozag 5 years from now.he sure gona blow up whether in uk ,canada, sweden, or NY
he gona blow up.he toasting homies ,prepare for the bake.

an o ye, westwood reps wat hes feelin man. i no of a show where westwood reps british and US alike cos thats his style. Without westwood hip hop in britain would be unsung. can ia also ask does the US think british all talk lyke that queen?.......

I recorded a few tracks with this uk cat named "STANDSTILL" son is one of the best uk lyricist i've hear. You have to remember that once you become comfortable with the accent and can clearly understand what they are saying. Some of these artists have pretty good content. Big ups to the uk on making the move. Mc solaar opened my eyes to a new world of with that french flow, so now i'm more tolerable of other regional acts. Big ups to "FLOWUNIT DIRTY UK".

Analogue

I know this is an old post and there are about a billion comments on it but I just gotta say...

I'm from the UK and I don't understand half of what Dizzee Rascal says either... still a bad MC though, it's all about the flow and the stage presence.

Might do a post on the UK v US thing at

straightoutleodis.blogspot.com

if I get a chance - too much to say to put down here.

aidan

the uk hip hop scene isnt trying to compete with the us scene, its doing its own thing and its not like jehst is trying to be up there with the us mc's hes also doing his own thing...and yeah hip hop was born in the us,but its not like the uk was just sitting on there arse doing nothing....slick rick anyone?

whoever said that westwood is doing anything positive for the uk hip hop game is diluded,he does nothing other then promote shitty main stream us hip hop..i rearly ever hear him talking about or playing any uk hip hop stuff.

dont get me wrong,im a big fan of us hip hop, started off listening to the usual westcoast gangster rap(dre, snoop, ice cube)
but it really started to bore me,its quite fake, talking about living in the hood and shit when they live in million dollar mansion....what us hip hop i do listen to now is dr octagon,mf doom,wu tang, king sun,mr complex because they are fresh and real

Feral

Eazy, another UK head here. I got into hip hop from when I was 11-12 years old starting off listening to mans like Dre, Monche, Redman, the mighty Wu, you know. But then I found out about mans like Blak Twang, Jehst, K-Lash and the mighty Task Force and my interest in the music really boooomed ya know. People saying the UK scene wont blow but I say let it stay that way, I like to think of it as hip hop's best kept secret man. I mostly listen to UK shit still, as well as the US artists still keeping it real, and branching out to mans on the southern hemisphere, those breddas are on it as much as us here in Blighty, plus their graff scene is FUCKED. Big ups for recognizing the UK, understand that we don't cater to a pre-determined sound coming from the states and just do what comes naturally. Other names that you should check out for and some CD's:

Universal Soldiers - Slanguage <- fucked album, big lyrics and heavy headnod beats
Foreign Beggars - Asylum Speakers <- Good mix up of styles and sounds, crazy album
Blak Twang - Dettwork Southeast <- Hip Hop's african cockney geeza, Rotton's got it on lock
Verb T & The Last Skeptik - Broken Window
Genesis Elijah - Deh Pon Road
Doc Brown - The Document
Dubbledge - Fist of Jah
Ghetto - Freedom Of Speech
Klashnekoff - The Sagas Of..
Chester P - From The Ashes
Task Force - Voice Of The Great Outdoors
London Posse - Gangster Chrinical

Shit there's so much out there if you start checking names you'll find features from other artists and the web expands

Understand this is my passion, we take this seriously over here. Understand that when I was younger I had no fuckin scooby what Americans where saying in this hip hop thing, but I learnt and over time picked up the lingo.

dom

Listen to free hip hop - havent' found a site like this - http://BuyHipHop.co.uk - you can listen to free UK hip hop only, with no american rubbish!

i think the uk scene is better than the us at the moment. maybe its more compact but theres a better outlay, when you got artists like jehst roots million dan blak twang skinnyman phi life cypher putting quality albums out, plus new albums from tricky and portishead on the trip hop tip, and the american scene is dry as fuck to compare...

i listen to more us hip hop particularly def jux and stones throw but in 2008 america has not done much for me

Im 29 been into hiphop since I was about 11 and started out listening to NWA, Geto Boys then loads of east coast such as Nas , Wu, Boot Camp, MOP, Gangstarr foundation plus bits of old UK hip hop like Hijack Rodney P/ london Posse, Gunshot until the 2nd wave of UK stuff got big like Taskforce, Braintax, Roots Manuva, Taipanic from blak Twang been doing his thing for a while as well...I think the majority of new US stuff has just become unlistenable, it mostly follows the 50Cent trend of sweet sounding club /r'n'b tracks then gangsta stuff that comes off as fake, c'mon whos movin weight and shootin people up when theyre in the pop charts? its bullsh*t... the only good stuff is that thats a bit more alternative orolder guys whov been doing theyre thing for a while like Cormega, Big Shug, anythin to do with premier like NYGz, Blaq poet....I think the grime scene now in the UK is really shaping up as they dont even try to appeal to the US market and speak about strictly UK things with their own slang and beats that tie in to dub, reggae dancehall and our old rave scene and drum & bass of course. I think for US peeps to understand it they have to just listen to the slang like us UK guys did with US stuff and try and pick it up. If your too lazy to try and do that then theres not much point cos I dont think many UK acts are even gonna try and water it down for american audiences anymore. Never heard much SAS but they do sound like US imitators to me...Some good UK emcees at the mo are Klashnekkof and Terra Firma, Black The Ripper (look for 'my minds battle'), Little Nasty, P-Money, Chester P ,Dubbledge, Roots Manuva, M9 from Triple Darkness (check out his vid on you tube for 'strange fruit') but loads of others too..
Peace

You need to man up haha, UK has too much talent, not everybody from the UK uses slang in every sentence it's just about who you listen to.

you must be joking. UK artists tear the majority of US artists. the underground, dusty vinyl scene etc. i mean, not dizzee rascal and co.

and in response to funny accents and slang, i listen to swedish hiphop and can still enjoy it.

u.k hip hop fan

not all u.k rapper are hard to understand.good ones to check out are phi life cypher, suspekt, chrome, cappo, warped ethics, rodney p there is loads of good crews still around.i tend to prefer the u.k sound it sounds as it should they have not done away with scratching, samples, tempo and rhyme flow in favor of money, videos and a cribs appearence like we seem to have done in the u.s these guys seem to do it for no other reason than they love hip hop.although i still listen to some u.s stuff its mainly classics like master ace etc or old 90's stuff as i find a lot of the new hip hop is more pop music.guess thats why i dig this u.k sound but like anywhere the best stuff is made by the underground unknown crews as apposed to clowns like that dizzie rascal
