Hip-Hop authors Jeff Chang and Toure can't stop, and won't stop never dranking the Kool-Aid. Tonight they are signing their books at my favorite bookstore, Hue-Man.
If I get over whatever has my stomach doing flip-flops, then I'll be there. If they say anything interesting, then I'll relay it here.
Since Bol cited me yesterday, I'll quote his reviews of Chang and Toure's books:
Bol on Chang's Can't Stop, Won't Stop:
"So few books have been written about hip-hop that even the worst of them are indispensable in a sense. Chang's book is definitely one of the better of the lot, but I still found it quite a chore to read. I recommend it, but I wonder how many people will be able to sit through it."
Bol on Toure's Never Drank the Kool-Aid:
"As with any collection of this type, obviously some articles are going to be better than others. The very best articles here are some of the best articles I ever read about hip-hop anywhere, which is, granted, not saying a whole lot, but still. The worst ones aren't as bad as they are boring and pointless."
See you there.
Jeebus ... Bol doesn't know the difference between Toure' and Kevin Powell?
In any case, Toure's interview with ?uestlove is terrific. I've never read the other articles Bol cites.
Thanks for the heads-up.
