Jay-Z orders boycott against Cristal Champaigne
I think Jay is doing the right thing. Standing up for hip hop. I bet he's going to declare war on Cristal at Radio City on the 24th. What do you think?
"In response to comments made by Frederic Rouzaud, the managing director of Louis Roderer Cristal, Jay-Z and his upscale sports lounge, The 40/40 Club, have announced that they will no longer be serving Cristal Champagne and Jay-Z will further help lead the boycott against Cristal Champagne in the world of hip-hop.
Despite loyal patronage by Jay-Z, his clientele, and the entire hip-hop community, Rouzaud said in a special edition of The Economist magazine that the company observes its association with the rap world with "curiosity and serenity." Even though Jay and other rappers continually support the brand by including Cristal in their lyrics, as Jay did in his number 1 hit "Hard Knock Life," Rouzaud has labeled the name-checks as "unwelcome attention." [PR Newswire]
Here is the Economist article in which Mr. Rouzaud disses hip hop patronage. Stupid, stupid move. It reminds me of the Tommy Hilfiger rumor about him saying that his clothes weren't meant for African-Americans. And we all know what happened- the Tommy trend died, FUBU was born and the seeds to the Marc Ecko and Sean John empires were sown. This time, its not a rumor, and the CEO of hip hop is leading the charge.
Go Jay-Z! Now if someone could pull his coat about this Net Neutrality issue...
And that Tommy Hill thing is a persistent urban legend. He never made those comments, but the rumor spread anyway.

Whadyamean? I've been boycotting Cristal my whole life! Shouts to Mango juice!

Champagne is just bad wine. *fist raised* Go Jay!

No alcohol for me. I like alcohol-free hip hop.

We need our own companies to produce this stuff that we can patronize then we won't have this issue. I never even hear heads mention Armadale anymore. It's not champagne but still.

P-Matik I agree.
I wonder if this incident has the potential to squash the beef between Jay and Cam.
Maybe Jay will encourage people to buy cases of Sizzurp on June 24th? You never know...

Dang, that was a dumb move. How can you hate on the people that love your brand the most? The whole corporation is bubbles. I admire Jay Z and see him as role model/father figure for what he has done with his life. Props mayne.

Cristal's going to be selling 40 ozs for $1.99 by next year now that the Rouzaud f--ked up. Moet's going to be the premiere drink for hip-hop, with St. Ides coming in at a close 2nd.

In response to the Jay Z Cristal Boycott.
As a former buyer in the spirits industry, I can shed some light on this from many angles. First and foremost the people who make Cristal could care less about Jay Z! I agree the statement made was very racist! However, what should we expect? Black people have no significant position in the alcohol industry outside of buying it. The only person that will be affected somewhat will be the salesperson who places the orders for jay z and his business. We should be asking ourself?? Has jay or any other rapper ever spoke to the makers of cristal? I know for a fact cristal is made and distributed in limited supply. At wholesale it could average between $90 to $100 depending on the market area buying it. It usually retails for $200

Vo comments continued...on Jay vs. Cristal
After you spend that $200 dollars it means nothing! No more than you enjoy fine champagne. The HIP HOP community seems to think money will equate to respect and appreciation. Well, as we all see it doesn't! The sad note is a lot of our people think there dollars can buy them a spot on top. What needs to happen is we ALL need to stop making companies richer that don't even respect us as consumers. Jay Z is rich but he aint makin $200 bottles of champagne being sold all over the world! We aint talkin cd's here people! If he and others like him investigated where some of these "finer" thing's came from, I believe they would find other high end product makers would feel the same. There are more companies who feel the same and would probably say worse, but have chosen to keep quiet, and keep gettin this money! The Cristal dude just had the nerve to let it be known. Being in that industry for three years, Cristal will never be hurt by this action. In the future, Mr Carter needs to look deeper than price, name and taste. A great foot note for our brothers, we need more Shawn Carter's not Jay z's!! Shawn Carter is where we need to be. Business is the key to American success!

Final comments on Jay vs. Cristal, from Vo!
As you have read, I am coming from an experienced and personal point of view. The beer wine and liquor industry is basically a legalized drug operation. Many of us consume alcohol in our version of choice. Some love beer while others like fine champagne. I want people to understand that this story must be more about the arroagance and dominance that liquor industry reps have. Black people this aint our shyt! Most of us have never had any cristal! If you're drinkin it, I hope you're rich! This is a product made for rich people. For those of you who don't have a clue...The makers of Cristal like Nike have many other items they sell! We talkin hundreds of millions of dollars moving around almost on a daily basis. Rapper's are not responsible for these type of number's. The maker's of cristal earn the majority of there millions from the wholesale distributors. So everyone out there who thinks Cristal will suffer is not in the know. The only way Jay's action would be felt, he would only have to convince a 1000 or so store owner's to join his fight. Aint gonna happen! Way too much money involved. Just wait till Mercedes says somethin..I guess Maybach's will be sittin on the side of the road?? Yeah Right! All of this drama means racist people are still among us. Dollars don't buy respect, and Black people poor and rich need to recognize when they're business is not wanted. Don't get mad about it, just spend your money elswhere. You don't need to be Jay Z to get proper treatment.

that is a great comment. why boycott something most people couldn't afford in the first place?
won't affect me at all, never bought the stuff, never will.

But what about the "free" advertising for Cristal? A cool rap line is way more catchy than a cheesy commercial spot. Jay Z created plenty of brand awareness for them for free. Whether it be in the clubs, radio, mtv, bet and the internet. Companies spend thousands a year trying to do this. I think it will be interesting to see what new "product placement" raps Jay Z will drop after all this drama.
