"We be sportin Vans and we throw away Nikes...."
This summer has been devoid of any big, quality hip hop singles. Those that were pushed on the radio (ex: "Deja Vu") had a shelf life akin to some corner bodega milk, and the only truly big club hits were crossover collabos from marginally talented R&B females (ex: hot ass Nelly Fertado, i-can't-sing Cassie, i-can't-sing either Rihanna). That being said, I declare The Pack- Vans as the summer single of the year. No, seriously. The kids like it, and the Vans footwear + Bay Area Hyphy tempo + skate culture angle is unique and fresh.
So why have you not heard of this song? Because 1) radio is wack, 2) hip hop skate culture is being peddled by the likes of pharell and lupe fiasco (neither of whom can really skate), and 3) E-40 ruined the Hyphy Movement
If I were a label head, I would NOT have had E-40 introduce the Hyphy Movement to the rest of the country. Yes, 40 water is a Bay Area legend, but outside of California his credibility takes a hit. No disrespect, but dude must be pushing 45 years old and does not look like the Bay kids whose culture and style he is supposedly reflecting and perpetuating. Hyphy needs something younger, more authentic and representative.... like The Pack. Feel me? - Michael
Update: Exclusive interview with The Pack regarding the Vans collabo coming soon on Hip Hop Ads. Yadidamean?
YO!!! You are absolutely right!!!!! I heard this track in Florida about 3 months ago and became addicted. However that Triggastate movement in FLA is giving this hyphy thing some challenge...www.Triggastate.com BUT THE PACK IS HOT as hell too

Hyphy is a gimmick, similiar to snap music. THe sub-genre is purely driven by the visual. Now, that's what I call a gimmick.

I honestly think that Hyphy is kinda cool. As an East Oakland born and bred brotha I've seen what is now known as hyphy grow from East Oakland sideshow culture transcend from the streets to the dancefloor. Really thats all it is.
If you had a chance to ever come to Bay and catch a sideshow or see one of the many DVD's like "Oakland Gone Wild" you would see cats dancing wild in the streets, freaks gettin butt naked, muhfuckas gettin pulled out they whips, dudes hittin donuts, and niggas stompin on cars, busses and basically tearin up shit.
On the real this shit has been going on for the past 25 or so years so it's nothing new. from Foothill Square in the 100's to 9-0 down MacArthur to Eastmont, to 5-0, Bancroft to Fairfax and all points in between is whats up.
Like I said this shit has been in the streets when hip hop was still an infant. Now Hyphy is taking over the standard bass heavy slower traditional Bay sound. I wouldn't say it will be fully accepted because I think rap is really wack right now but thats my opinion.
So Hate it Love it itz Town Bizzness!

apparently this video has been banned on mtv cause somebody decided this was a free 4 minute commercial for vans, unlike several other rap songs that display the same amount of product placement (i'm sure the hip-hop geeks out there that check out blogs can come up with a list of their own) that have recieved heavy rotation on the channel.
