When magazines like The Fader began podcasting free PDF versions of their magazine, I thought it was either a terrible idea or a really terrible idea. Now I see Vibe has entered into the digitized magazine game, a week before a Poynter story on how the format is not appealing to readers, online or off.
I don't consume, share, or save paper mags in the same way I do with online ones. There's no easy way to translate the glossy experience online, unless someone makes a laptop I can hold in one hand while standing on the 2 train.
I would be willing to pay for high quality versions of the photos that I find in my favorite music mags. I remember contacting the photographer who did a great Lupe Fiasco spread in XXL, and dude wanted to charge me 300 coins for the prints. I tried to talk him down to 50, but he never budged.
So, there's money to be made in digitizing mag content, but PDFs aint' the way to go.
BONUS: Young adults who sell mag subscriptions are being "exploited" by the industry.
it's all about the ad $$$$.
certain publications use the download PDF version of their magazines to up their circulation numbers to keep the ad money coming in.
REALLY interesting when you consider that print advertising revenue has dipped by double digit percentages in the past few years-
so magazines are not digitizing to create an additional ad stream, or to extend their reach. they are doing it to maintain their current or offset their falling numbers so advertisers won't leave in favor of the internet.
mags make no money off subscriptions. >90% of revenue comes from the ads.
magazine biz = music biz = attempting to stay relevant in the fragmenting media market

Mirateck, you're probably right. I believe ABC now allows the digital form of mags to be counted in circ numbers.

Digitization of the publication will increase the circulation and also it is the best way to reach quickly. In this digital age, many people using e-publication websites to find their favorite publications. So every publisher should have digital editions for their print publication to increase the circulations. Recently I found the website www.pressmart.net which providing the digital editions of print publications. Publishers should utilize these kinds of services.
